How Calgary Prayer Times Are Calculated

This page explains, in plain words, how the prayer times on this site are worked out.

The method we use

The timetable on this site uses the ISNA method — the method of the Islamic Society of North America.

  • Fajr: 15 degrees below the horizon
  • Isha: 15 degrees below the horizon
  • Asr: the standard (Shafi’i) rule

Times are calculated from Calgary’s latitude and longitude (51.0447° N, 114.0719° W) using astronomical data for the position of the sun, and shown in Calgary local time.

Daylight saving time

The times are adjusted for daylight saving time. When Calgary’s clocks change, the times shown change with them.

Why another site may show a different time

Another website may show a different Fajr or Isha time for the same day. That does not necessarily mean one of them is wrong. Different calculation methods use different angles — for example, some methods use 18 degrees for Fajr and Isha instead of 15 degrees. This site uses ISNA, 15 degrees for both Fajr and Isha. A site using a different method will show a different time.

The prayer-time widget on the home page lets you change the calculation method for your own view. The default, and the method used for this site’s timetables, is ISNA.

Why times are unusual in Calgary in summer

Calgary is at about 51 degrees north. Near the summer solstice, the sun does not go far enough below the horizon at night for Fajr and Isha to be calculated in the usual way. The timetable on this site does not use a separate summer rule: it uses the same ISNA calculation all year. Local mosques may follow a different rule, so please check with your mosque.

What we do not do

  • We do not copy prayer times from another website.
  • We do not change a time by hand to match a mosque timetable. Mosque timetables, Jumu’ah times and Iqama times are set by each mosque, and may differ from the times on this site.
  • We do not invent mosque times. If a mosque page on this site does not show a Jumu’ah or Iqama time, it is because we do not have a verified time for it.

If you think a time is wrong

Please tell us through the Contact Us page. Include the date, the prayer name, and the time you observed, and the mosque name if the time came from a mosque. We will check it and correct it if it is wrong. See our Correction Policy.
